#c4ed Trusting Parents

The is much talk about parents being the judges of good schools; what makes a school ‘good’ or ‘bad’. But what criteria do they have to judge?

It is not a matter of trusting or not trusting parents but of ensuring that they are involved, informed and valued. If they are to judge our schools, then these judgements need to be made on modern criteria and not by their own experiences of schooling. This might lead to slow progress or even regression in education.

Education in schools is for pupils, not for parents, it is the pupils’ needs that should be the priority. However, it is usually true that parents want the best for their children, so there should be no conflict. The challenge for professionals working in education is that we must ensure that parents understand and are able to support, or knowledgeably question, our approaches to the learning of their children.
